Keeping Your Home Cool This Summer: Beat the Heat with Simple Strategies

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and back then we always had a few super hot summer days—otherwise, a couple of electric fans seemed sufficient. No longer! As our summer temperatures soar upwards year after year, keeping your house cool and livable is now a higher priority for both comfort and energy efficiency. We’ve got the lowdown on practical strategies to create a more pleasant indoor environment.

1. Utilize Window Coverings

  • Blinds and Curtains: During the day, close blinds and curtains on windows receiving direct sunlight. This simple step can significantly reduce heat gain inside your home.
  • Reflective or Blackout Curtains: If you’ve got some west-facing windows that get the hot afternoon sun, consider investing in curtains with a reflective backing or blackout curtains that block out sunlight effectively.

2. Minimize Heat Sources

  • Appliances: Avoid using heat-generating appliances like ovens and stoves during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, opt for quick meals that require minimal cooking. It’s why hot countries have cold soups! If you’ve got an outdoor grill, summer is definitely the time to use it.
  • Lights: Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED lights that emit less heat. Use lamps instead of overhead lights (you’ll save on electricity, too).

3. Strategic Ventilation

  • Cross-Ventilation: Open windows on opposite sides of your home to allow for cross-ventilation. This helps create a natural breeze and cools down indoor spaces.
  • Night Ventilation: Open windows during the cooler evenings and nights to let in fresh, cooler air. This can help lower indoor temperatures before the next day’s heat.

4. Optimize Fans

  • Ceiling Fans: Use ceiling fans to create a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler. Ensure they rotate counterclockwise in the summer for optimal cooling (Pro tip: In the winter, rotate them clockwise to keep the room warmer.).
  • Portable Fans: Place portable fans—desk, tower, pedestal—strategically near windows or in areas where you spend the most time.
  • Box or Circulating Fans: When using strategic ventilation techniques (#3), one of these on the floor in the main hallway is incredibly helpful with moving air from one end of the house/apartment to the other. The Vornado fans are amazing at circulating air.
  • Window Fans: Also terrific for strategic ventilation techniques (#3). During the day, you can set it on Exhaust to move the hot indoor air out. During the cool evening, set it on High and bring the cooler outside air in.
  • Whole-House Fan: Use it at night and early morning (the coolest parts of the day) to rid your home of heat that built up while the sun was out.

5. Create Shade

  • Outdoor Shade: Plant trees or install awnings outside windows to shade your home from direct sunlight—especially on the west side of your home.
  • Indoor Shade: Use indoor plants to create natural shading and improve indoor air quality.

6. Cooling Systems

  • Air Conditioning: Set your air conditioner to a higher temperature (such as 78º) when you’re not at home to save energy. Use programmable thermostats to adjust temperatures automatically.
  • Alternative Cooling: Consider portable air conditioners or evaporative coolers as more energy-efficient alternatives in smaller spaces.

7. Insulation and Sealing

  • Insulation: Ensure your home is well-insulated, especially in the attic and walls, to prevent heat transfer from the outside.
  • Sealing: Seal any gaps or cracks around windows and doors to prevent warm air from entering and cool air from escaping.

By implementing these easy-to-follow tips, you can maintain a cooler and more comfortable home environment throughout the summer months. And hey, who knows, you might even become the neighborhood expert on staying cool. Not only will you enhance your living conditions, but you’ll also reduce energy consumption and costs associated with keeping your home cool. Stay cool, stay comfortable, and enjoy your summer without the heat getting in the way!
