We worked with so many clients preparing for a move this summer and that moving momentum has continued right into fall. While moving can be an exciting fresh start, it can also feel overwhelming when you’re looking around your home and realizing just how much you have accumulated.
One of the biggest mistakes we see? Packing everything simply because it’s easier than deciding what to do with it.
A move is actually one of the best opportunities to take a step back, declutter, and create a more organized home from the very beginning. After all, why pay to pack, load, transport, and unpack things you no longer want or need? The less you move, the less there is to unpack—and depending on your moving costs, decluttering before moving day can even help save money!
So, before you start filling those boxes, here are a few of our favorite tips for making your next move more organized, less overwhelming, and a little easier on your moving budget.
1. Don’t Move What You Don’t Want
It sounds obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to pack something simply because you’ve had it for years.
Before putting something in a box, ask yourself:
“If I were shopping for this today, would I buy it?”
If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.
Moving is the perfect time to tackle those items you’ve been meaning to donate, sell, recycle, or discard. Clothing you never wear, duplicate kitchen gadgets, outdated paperwork, forgotten toys, and miscellaneous items taking up valuable storage space can all be evaluated before they make the trip to your new home.
The less you move, the less you have to unpack and the easier it is to create organized spaces in your new home!
2. Start With the Spaces You Use the Most
You don’t have to declutter your entire house at once.
Start with the areas that tend to create the most frustration in your everyday life. Maybe that’s the kitchen, your closet, the garage, or the entryway.
Working room by room or even category by category can make the process feel much more manageable.
And remember: you don’t have to make every decision in one afternoon! A little progress before packing day can make a huge difference.
3. Pack With Your New Home in Mind
One of our favorite moving tips is to think about where things are going before you pack them.
Instead of labeling a box simply “Kitchen,” try being more specific:
- Everyday dishes
- Baking supplies
- Coffee station
- Pantry
- Under-sink supplies
This makes unpacking much easier and helps you begin creating systems as soon as you arrive.
If you already know where certain items will live in your new home, pack them together accordingly. Your future self will thank you when you’re standing in the middle of a room surrounded by boxes!
4. Create an “Open First” Zone
Not everything needs to be unpacked on day one.
Set aside a few boxes or bins with the essentials you’ll need immediately after the move. Think:
- Toiletries
- Medications
- Basic kitchen supplies
- Chargers
- A few changes of clothes
- Towels
- Cleaning supplies
- Important documents
Having these essentials together means you don’t have to dig through ten different boxes just to find your toothbrush or phone charger.
5. Give Everything a Home But Don’t Rush It
Once you arrive at your new home, it can be tempting to unpack as quickly as possible just to get the boxes out of sight.
But empty boxes aren’t the same thing as an organized home.
Instead of putting something wherever there’s an available space, take some time to think about how you’ll actually use the room.
Where do you naturally drop your keys?
Where do backpacks come off?
Where will mail come in?
Where do you reach for your everyday kitchen items?
The best organizing systems aren’t necessarily the prettiest ones—they’re the ones that make everyday life easier.
6. Give Yourself Permission to Have a “Not Sure Yet” Category
Moving can bring a lot of decisions, and you don’t have to make every single one immediately.
If you’re unsure where something belongs or whether you’re ready to let it go, create a designated “not sure yet” box or area.
The important part is giving those items a boundary.
Once you’re settled, you can revisit the category with fresh eyes and decide what truly deserves space in your new home.
7. Remember: Your Move Can Be a Fresh Start
A move isn’t just about transporting your belongings from one address to another. It’s an opportunity to think about how you want your home to function in this next chapter.
What wasn’t working in your previous home?
What always seemed to pile up?
What did you wish you had a better system for?
Use your move as a chance to rethink those problem areas instead of automatically recreating the same systems in a new space.
