Fall Back in Love with Your Home

This month, we’re suggesting something different. Instead of waiting for a burst of spring motivation to organize, what if you started now? Not a big overhaul. Just some focused attention on the spaces you’ve been neglecting.

February in the Pacific Northwest is often gray and wet. Most of us are home more than usual, and start noticing the kitchen piles, bedroom clutter, or other heaps in different areas.

Find your starting point

Most homes have one main area that quietly drains you every time you walk by. You’ve trained yourself to ignore it, but know it’s there. Whether that’s the overloaded entryway, the guest room that became a storage room or the home office that makes it hard to think.

That’s your starting point. Not because it’s the easiest, but because fixing it will mean something to you. Ask yourself honestly: what would it feel like to walk into that space and have it work? Hold onto that feeling. It’s more motivating than any organizational system.

A simple exercise to help clear clutter

Grab a notepad and walk through your home slowly and deliberately paying attention. Write down everything you’re tolerating, big or small, without editing yourself. The drawer that won’t close, the overflowing smorgasbord shelf, the pile of knickknacks you’ve kept out of obligation.

Don’t try to fix anything yet. Just get it on paper. Once you can see the full list, you’ll almost always find that a few targeted changes make a bigger difference than you expected.

Small changes, impactful results

Some of the most satisfying home transformations we’ve seen didn’t involve a single trip to a container store. They came from small changes like these:

  • Moving a piece of furniture that was blocking light or making a room feel cramped.
  • Clearing one surface and making a real commitment to keeping it clear.
  • Moving things to where they’re actually used, not where they ended up.
  • Letting go of things that are taking up space out of guilt rather than genuine use.

All this requires is being willing to look at your home with fresh eyes.
