Clients often ask me how and why I became a professional organizer. I get excited when I am asked this question because I truly love what I do. I have about six years of organizing experience under my belt and I have answered this question a lot. It boils down to three things: I love stuff. I love organizing other people’s stuff. I love helping people truly enjoy their homes by organizing their stuff.
My relationship with stuff is interesting. I spent my childhood accompanying my mom and grandmother to many garage sales, estate sales, antique stores and thrift stores all around King County. As a result, I have a lot knowledge about what collectibles have value, which ones don’t, what can sell in a consignment store, and what collections are on trend. I understand and appreciate the relationship clients have with their treasures. I also appreciate the value of a clutter free home. When clients are grappling with too much volume, my favorite question to ask is, “does this item need you?”
My grandmother was the queen of shopping. When we were not treasure hunting I was either at her house organizing her three clothing closets, or at the dry cleaners she and my grandfather owned organizing her work station. I used to drive her crazy because I would gather up all her black pants (she had a lot!) and say “see, you don’t need to buy anymore!” I don’t think she appreciated a 13-year-old telling her what to do. At the dry cleaners, she allowed me to organize her sewing station. I often organized the thread wall by color. I also organized all her sewing drawers. It brought me so much joy to see the spools color coordinated. I got so much satisfaction from seeing the overall visual improvement.
As I grew into adulthood I became aware that I wanted to focus my energies on giving back to others. I also gained valuable organizing product knowledge working at The Container Store. My work at Simplify Experts combines the two things I am most passionate about: helping others and organizing! As a professional organizer, I am often overcome with that feeling of “ahhh” when we complete an organizing session. My clients are often in shock, because they didn’t believe such a transformation could occur. I love to see my clients have the weight of clutter lifted off of them.
When I am not working with clients, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, cooking, and working on furniture makeovers. My husband and I live in Kirkland with our two young boys and a cat named Lola.
